Shook is the founder of Shook Yoga and its instructor. Here
is her story.
I
was diagnosed with Lupus in my teens. Lupus is an immune deficiency
disease. It left my energy levels low and gave me joint pain
similar to the effects of arthritis. After a few years of suffering,
a friend suggested I try yoga. I found in yoga an activity I
could freely perform that would not aggravate the symptoms of
the disease. Yoga naturally gave me the strength and energy
I needed and after a few years with yoga, I was able to stop
taking many of the drugs prescribed for me.
After
ten years of yoga classes, which often did not fit my needs,
I decided to take instructions and teach yoga myself. I began
teaching a children's class shortly after the birth of my daughter.
I took instructions with Nancy Ruby at Yoga Motion in Utah and
became a fully accredited instructor. I held the position of
head instructor for Holland Community Hospital's Center for
Good Health for three years. I was teaching as many as 185 students
a week. The Hospital decided to focus on other programs, so
yoga and several other fitness-related classes were no longer
available through the Center for Good Health. I decided to open
Shook Yoga in response to requests of my students and others
in the community.
Today,
Shook Yoga offers a full range of yoga instructions for beginners
to advanced students of all ages and sexes. Classes on the beach
at Holland State Park are designed to accentuate the holistic
benefits of yoga. I continue to work with children and adults
to create special programs to meet everyone's needs.
